The Playstation Vita. A great portable gaming console for those wanting an immersive gaming experience in a pocketable form-factor. Inspired by the Vita's cousin, the Playstation Portable (PSP), the Vita has yet to decide whether it is a powerful gaming console, or a phone turned ultimate gaming device. It runs off of a kernel of Google's Android platform, which has been modified by software engineers at Sony to develop a user-friendly experience with as little hassle as possible. The Vita runs off of a Quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor and a Quad-core graphics chip as well. The Vita also features a 5" OLED touchscreen display with a resolution of 960x544, and supports playback of 1080p HD content.
It also has a touchpad on the back, which as of now has not been integrated with any of the games. Running with 1gb of RAM and the multi-core processor, the Vita has no problem handling almost anything you can throw at it, including graphics intensive games and applications. The Vita has front and rear facing VGA cameras for video calling and taking pictures. Taking it back a couple of years, the PS Vita runs off of games loaded onto CompactFlash-like storage cartridges. It has a few drawbacks though, such as a proprietary power adapter and memory cards, and an extremely limited physical game library. As of now, there may be around 10 games that you can go and purchase physically in store, and around 100 in the form of digital download. As for my view on the console, the Playstation Vita packs a big punch in a small package, but is it worth the price? The bottom line PS Vita costs $249.99 in the US. For that price, you could buy an XBOX-360 and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. I personally would rather have the 360 and have a better graphics experience and more immersive gameplay. I guess that's not really fair considering that the XBOX is a home console, and the PS Vita is a portable. In the end, it all really comes down to your personal preference, and if you feel like blowing $250 big ones on a portable console with a good amount of nuisances. The Playstation Vita is available now at major retailers near you.
